Slovenian wines a success in Helsinki

17.03.2008, Capodistria, Helsinki.

From 12. to 15th of March Helsinki, Finland, hosted the main Finnish wine fair Viiniexpo 2008, marked by the presentation of Slovenian wines.
The first two days the fair hosted the visitors of the trade (importers, distributors, sommeliers, wine traders). On Saturday the fair was open also to other wine lovers. With the Finnish legislation on import and sale of alchocol being very strict, the state supervises all the import of the alcohol, mostly sold by the state's monopoly company, while some minor importers and distributors supply mostly the restaurants and catering industry. Moreover, the alcohol is submitted to higher tax, thus being quite expensive.

The slovenian viticulturists have presented themselves for the first time in organized fashion in the Finnish capital and arranged the tasting of the wines from all three viticultural areas of Slovenia. The fair presented 18 bigger and smaller Slovenian viticulturists all together, including 9 viticulturists from Radgonske gorice, Dveri Pax, Santomas, Rodica, Ferdinand, Saksida, Vinakoper and Goriška Brda and sommelier Igor Jakomin representing the wines of other ten Slovenian winecellars.

The Slovenian wines, mostly the original sorts from the coast have undoubtedly draw the attention of the Finnish public. A great success among red wines was the Refosco, Rebula and Zelen and especially Malvazija among white wines. Over 1.500 visitors in three days, coming from Sweden and Baltic (Lithuania, Estonia, Latvia) as well, have agreed upon excellent blend of Malvazija with Finnish traditional food (salmon, trout).

With the title »Those in trend drink the wines from Slovenia« the Slovenian wines have also successfully made their way to the Finnish media. The viticulturists of Slovenia thus undeniably contributed to the promotion of our country as an attractive destination, accessible by a direct air route from Finnish capital.
